shore crab

I was out exploring this morning when I came across this little crabby critter. While I was pretty sure I recognized it, I checked it out using Seek by iNaturalist and learned something new. I’ve always known this crab by its latin name (hemigrapsus oregonensis) or by the common names ‘hairy shore crab’ (because of the hairs on it’s legs) or ‘green shore crab’ (because of a common colour) but found it is also known as the yellow shore crab! This difference in common names really shows me why the latin name is preferred in science. I wonder though, what have peoples from this area called this little crab?  An interesting fact about this shore crab: it comes in many colours including black and white, yellowish, greenish, brownish. Seek also shared with me some similar species including the purple shore crab (hemigrapsus nudus) and also the European Green Crab that I hope I don’t find!!
